- Mingyur Rinpoche's Four Reminders from the "Nectar of the Path" written in 2010Dans Sharing Space·17 October 2024Begin by cultivating a sense of delight in the qualities of the freedoms and riches: Seeing its many wonderful qualities, I rejoice and delight in this human life. Next contemplate the impermanence nature of phenomena: Like waves in the ocean, all things are impermanent. I will accept whatever happens and make it my friend. Contemplate the interdependence of causes and conditions: When causes and conditions come together, the result is sure to follow, so I will do my best to help others and engage in positive deeds. Contemplate the dreamlike quality of the suffering of Samsara: The suffering of beings is mainly produced by the mind. I must free myself from my self-created bonds.3181
- Chögyam Trungpa on why Shamata practice makes you Adult.Dans Sharing Space·18 April 2024We had a lovely session of shamata practice this morning and I read this quote from Trungpa’s The Path of Individual Liberation p 232 If you don't have a good relationship with yourself, you cannot understand the dharma, and your body and mind will not be properly coordinated. The practice of meditation helps you to coordinate your body and your mind. You realize that your mind can be directed to a particular effort, that your mind works. Through shamatha you are able to raise your mind to an adult level. Your mind does not jump all over the place whenever you try to do something. In this samsaric world, most of you have grown up physically, but psychologically you are very young. You can't concentrate. You can't eat even one good meal properly because your mind is constantly jumping all over the place. The basic message of shamatha practice is that your mind could be as adult as your body.3135

- PoetryDans Sharing Space·11 May 2022I joined Mindsprings a while ago and found it immensely helpful to my heightened anxiety states. I have found some poetry to be hugely comforting, knowing that other people have been in the same state of mind and come through better stronger humans. P. Cavafy’s poem ’Ithaca’ is one that grows in my comprehension the more times I read it. I have also tried to learn poems by heart, which I found relatively easy as a young person, but now takes a lot longer. I was recently in Hospital, and it was a bit scary, so I called on my memory for the three poems I had learnt in the last two years and it was so helpful. Robert Frost’s ‘ stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’, ‘High Flight’ by John Gillespie McGee and Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116.1635

- Caleidoscopic meDans Sharing Space28 September 2023Dear Mechteld, this is beautiful. You have been through so much pain and anguish, of late. I'm not sure I could have come through it as well as you have. For different reasons, (age related) I also feel resentment towards my seemingly inept body that doesn't seem to have the energy and oomph that I still require. Thank heaven for the simple pleasures in life. My little garden is my haven. All the while I can tend it and nurture it, plus meeting up with this lovely gang, I know I can be happy with my lot. sending love to you and family. XX23
- The trouble with interbeingDans Alistair Clips24 April 2023Thank you so much! I like to add how much I feel at home with you and this community. The way you so quickly gasp what I mean and the nuanced thinking is consoling to me. Interconnectedness as joy, as the most sacred feeling I know, as a thing I marvel at, that makes my mind blow and yes also the feeling of a deep ultimate responsibily are the themes of my life. Lately I have also been remembering the work of Donna Haraway - which I read over 20 yrs ago during my PhD. She is a biologist, feminist thinker who wrote marvelous yet difficult books about interconnectedness (e.g. the suffering of Oncomouse) which I think remain very relevant to what we discussed today. But the most joyful text is her companion species manifesto about how dogs and humans have evolved together over millenia and how that matters in our relationships with them today. It was actually your/Alistairs ill cat that reminded me of Donna. Highly recommended!23

- Hello from Canada’s West CoastDans Sharing Space·16 August 2022Hello all! I’m from Steveston BC which is very close to Vancouver on the west coast of Canada. A friend recommended this site to me and given my recent unexpected and unwelcome encounters with anxiety, I thought I‘d jump into the Mastering Monsters course to see if I could find some new tools that may help me deal with this bothersome state of mind. I enjoy following the guidance of Echkart Tolle and Michael Singer and though I believe whole heartedly with their views on being present and accepting each moment as it arises, sometimes their recommended techniques just don’t seem to be enough to keep the seeds of discouragement planted by anxiety from growing into unwanted plants in my garden of calm and gratitude.2329
