Alistair's new Substack

Hello, lovely folks.

I've started up a Substack (which is like an intelligent social network for writers and thinkers), and I'll be posting articles there instead of the Mindsprings blog.

It's free while I'm seeing how I like it, but the first post might be interesting for you as it lays out the first thinking around "Relax and Enjoy", which we've been exploring this year.

Please do subscribe if you like it!

Greetings! I am reading this incredible post for the fifth time to attempt to grasp all of its concepts, and I am struck again by how profound yet personal this thought-provoking article is. There is so much meaning here, so much to contemplate as Alistair contends that notions of true enjoyment and real relaxation are "radical" and "explosive", and counter what religion and society have stunted us with - propoganda against pleasure! This is rich stuff, and I keenly look forward to future posts by Alistair. And Alistair, you are most welcome to post these comments on Substack.

Words to share: Love extravagantly!

Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world.

All things break. And all things can be mended.

Not with time, as they say, but with intention.

So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally.

The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.

The Heart Sutra

The Vulture Peak in Rajgir where the Buddha taught the Heart Sutra

We're going to spend a couple of weeks looking at the Heart Sutra on Thursdays before my summer break. That way we have the whole of August to chew it over.

I'm going to use Thich Nhat Hanh's beautiful new translation:

This is a very lucid and clear translation. There is also the joy of hearing the Plum Village sangha chanting it:

A more detailed and traditional translation can be found on the excellent 84000 site:

I know its a simple perspective , but the song Row, row , row your boat pretty much sums it up for me (life is but a dream ) πŸ™
