- A snippet from the new Thursday cycle on the first immeasurable, Mettā.In Sharing Space·31 October 2024We started a new 8-week cycle of Buddhist exploration at 8 am this morning - looking at the "four immeasurables" of loving kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita) and equanimity (uppekha). We began with a meditation, exploring the atmosphere of our own minds. Are we irritated, grumpy or unkind about the phenomena of our mind? In the discussion, we looked at the aversion many of us in the West have about wishing ourselves well... Here's a snippet from that discussion: https://share.descript.com/view/Orbwpz0ql1z6241

- Sharing our summer fruitsIn Sharing Space29 August 2023I have spent my days running around after an increasing number of children.... 😅 I oscillate between gratitude for being blessed with a beautiful family, and frustration with my inability to accept that my life isn't about me anymore (while at the same time feeling guilty that I'm not always in the former state of mind!). There are definitely lots of teachings in there about grasping, desire, acceptance and ego. One thing I love is seeing the world through my toddler's eyes. The uncomplicated joy with which he greets each day and the unfolding world around him - is there a better example of present-moment living and pure open-minded curiosity than a 3-year-old's delight at finding a ladybird? I'm starting to think we are all born as Buddhas and slowly conditioned out of it! Here's a little snap of the 12-week-old for good measure: 😊61
- While researching the Milarepa course...In Sharing Space·1 February 2023...I came upon this moving video of the Dalai Lama teaching on Milarepa's last teaching to his foremost disciple Gampopa. Having shared all the most profound teaching he said he had one last teaching to pass on. He then lifted his robe and showed Gampopa the callouses on his backside from the years of meditating in caves. Even though there is no translation of what His Holiness is saying, it is a great example of teaching-beyond-words. As he describes that transmission he breaks down into tears - and then moments later is laughing again. Being moved by the great compassion of Milarepa - but also demonstrating how we as humans can oscillate through all emotions so beautifully. It is itself a profound teaching.6142
