ALISTAIR APPLETON Hello there! I'm so happy that you've taken a moment to follow your nose and find out more about the face on the telly! As well as my TV work on Escape to the Country , House Doctor and Cash in the Attic , I'm also an accredited psychotherapist and meditation teacher living down in Sussex with my husband, Daniel, and my dog, Ben. Please scroll down and have a nose around... Keep up to date with me Living more calmly... Following my own advice, I escaped to the country from London in 2013 and live near the sea in East Sussex. I'm a very enthusiastic Buddhist meditator and I've been teaching people how to meditate for more than 15 years! That passion gave birth to Mindsprings the organisations I run that explores the uses of therapeutic meditation. Learn to meditate with me Beating anxiety... Around 2012, I got ill. After a very stressful breakup, working crazy hours, finishing an intense therapy training and buying and renovating a London home. At the time I didn't know it was anxiety, but I couldn't sleep, felt constantly tired and worried about everything. In the last 10 years, I've worked hard to understand and transform my anxiety. And that's one of the things I help other people to overcome too. Master your anxiety safely Inviting you to stay in touch... I'm always so happy when people say hello or stop to say how much they like the show on TV. I'm also very happy when people pick up something from my on-screen work and follow a hunch that they might like to know more about me. So I've built this beautiful website to help you stay in touch and join the community of people who meditate with me or who are exploring therapeutic meditation. Natural World, Natural Mind. 7-14 October 2023 MIndsprings Autumn Holy Isle Retreat Naturalise your mind on Holy Isle this Autumn... Book your place for October For the last 10 years or more, I have been gathering groups of more experienced meditators to Holy Isle to explore compassion and loving kindness. While October 2023 is still a compassion retreats of sorts, this year I wanted to do something different. Inspired by my year-long immersion in deep ecology and discovery of meditation out in the open air, I wanted this Mindsprings Autumn retreat to be a more radical retreat - in the sense of getting to the root of things. The wonderful biologist and indigenous writer, Robin Wall-Kimmerer asked a group of her undergraduate students if they loved the Earth. Naturally, almost all spoke about their passion for plants, rivers, mountains and ecology. But when she ask if they felt like the Earth loved them back, they all fell silent. Why is it that we don’t feel the love of the planet all around us? Why do we often feel lonely and isolated in a landscape that is full of trees, grasses, insects, animals, birds and weather? Is it habit of mind? Does meditating inside silent halls make that habit more intense? Spending time outside in the glorious gardens, beaches and wild spaces of Holy Isle gives us the perfect space to explore different ways to receive this love. And I have discovered that a freer, more extended form of “meditation” helps that happen. “Sitting out” practice is a free-form meditation where you pick a spot in the natural world and stay there for an hour or two (or three!) without trying to control your mind but allowing it to be “wilded” by the natural world. Within the friendly, warm and curious Mindsprings group we can then sift through our findings and explore deeper and deeper ways of connecting to the natural mind and the natural world. But particularly allowing it to soften our nervous systems and sensitise us to the richness of the surround world. This retreat is open to everyone who has a passion for the natural world but also some experience of sitting with their minds. It’s probably not suitable for complete beginners. Do contact me if you are not sure if it’s for you. What is 'sitting out' practice? Sitting out is a form of very simple but very profound mind-magic. You stay put in a 2m x 2m spot in the natural world for long periods, simply watching the mind and watching the world. There is no particular meditation instruction - everyone finds their own insight as the practice unfolds Traditionally done for 24 hours, this course is going to work with much more manageable chunks of 2-3 hours building up to longer sits if you feel inspired. The practice is best done in the natural world with just a bottle of water for sustenance, so it requires wet-weather gear. This retreat will be held as a group though the 'sitting out' sessions are done on your own. We will meet at the start and end of the day to compare notes and practice together. This is a chance for more experienced practitioners to get back to the 'wild roots' of outdoor-living yogis. But with a warm meal and hot shower at the end of the day! Please do consider coming but also recognise that it does involve long stretches of time practising outside! Beingfulness on the Island this Summer About Dundreggan The Dundreggan Rewilding Centre is one of restoration and regeneration. It's the gateway to a flagship rewilding estate and tree nursery, where Trees for Life grow tens of thousands of trees each year, including rare and hard-to-grow species. Located just eight miles from Loch Ness, the estate has been rewilded by Trees for Life since 2008, recovering from centuries of damage caused by sheep, goats and deer grazing. By allowing the forest to regenerate naturally, they have expanded important fragments of Scotland’s Caledonian forest, providing a habitat for over 4,000 species of plants and animals, including golden eagles and black grouse. When you come to Dundreggan you can now explore ancient pinewood and unique juniper forest, discover centuries of Gaelic history, and connect with a landscape undergoing transformation through rewilding. Our Rewilding Centre provides a space for a larger, more diverse audience to enjoy the wonders of nature and the heritage of the Scottish Highlands. All the information about Alistair Appleton's Mindsprings meditation Retreat at Gayles Retreat Centre in September 2023 London Weekend: Tapping into Freedom 15-16 April 2023 Turbo charge your meditation. Clear troubling blockages. Alistair shares his secret weapon in powering his meditation. And life. For more than 10 years, I've been using the techniques of energy psychology (tapping, chakra clearing) to break through blockages in my life. I worked in my personal therapy with an amazing EP therapist, and in my own work as a therapist I have used tapping with powerful results. But it's only recently that I've decided to share how I work with tapping in my meditation practice. Mastering the basic EP skills of tuning-up, muscle testing, tapping and chakra clearing have consistently helped me along the meditative path. And I want to share them with you. On this in-person weekend in London you will: get an overview of energy psychology and how it works learn to bring your mind-body 'online' when it's scrambled communicated directly with your mind-body using muscle-testing integrate EP techniques into your meditation practice master 'central clearing' to remove troubling patterns that stymie practice expand EP into dharma practice and into your life Book your place for April now What is Energy Psychology? Energy Psychology is a relatively recent arrival in mental health, starting in the field of kinesiology in the 1980s. Still, its roots go back to the yogic practices of the subtle body (chakras, meridians etc.) and to the Tibetan practice of Vajrasattva. In essence, EP works to clear the debris of trauma from the human nervous system/energy body. A common metaphor is that of a river. Trauma leaves big boulders in the river of life and water has to take a highly-pressurized or distorted route to continue. EP removes the boulders and allows the natural health of the body-mind to re-establish itself. Combining cognitive elements (phrase making) with meridian work (tapping on acupressure points or holding energy centres) this unusual form of therapy achieves astonishing results. Many people feel that psychic knots that have bedevilled them for many years are released all at once without remainder. Combining EP techniques with meditation practice can lead to great leaps in our spiritual path and a much more optimistic viewpoint for enlightenment. Master the basics of EP to improve your life Pricing Mindsprings is well aware that many people are having to tighten their belts at the moment, financially. So we offer two prices for this weekend. A full, supporters fee which helps us cover our costs and a subsidised concessionary rate for any of you who are struggling financially. If you can pay the full price that will help us invite more people on the concessionary rate. And if you would struggle to pay that reduced ticket rate then please do drop us a line. We never want people to miss out on meditation because of poxy old money. We can sort something out for you. Book the two kinds of tickets here. - Milarepa 6-Week Course | Mindsprings
All the information about Alistair Appleton's Mindsprings online six-week study group looking at the spontaneous songs and teachings of the medieval Tibetan mystic, Milarepa. 2nd Feb - 9 March 2023. 6 Week Course: Milarepa 2 February - 9th March 2023 Tibet's great mountain mystic - studying the "100,000 Songs" together Immerse yourself in Tibetan Buddhism and the magical life of Milarepa The 11th Century was the time of the Norman period in England, and the Song Dynasty in China. The Toltecs were ruling Mexico, Angkor Wat was being built. It was the twilight of the Byzantine empire. But in a mountainous region of Tibet, a young man was undergoing a profound spiritual transformation from a murderer of 35 people to one of the most legendary and highly-regarded practitioners in Tibetan Buddhism. Milarepa (c.1051-1135) was from a well-to-do family who had been cheated of their wealth. And driven by a vengeful mother he learned black magic and caused the death of 35 of his relatives. Inspired by simply hearing the name of his teacher, Marpa, he went through gruelling penances to get to a place where he could receive the highest Buddhist teaching and then spent the rest of his long life teaching from icy mountain retreats - and singing spontaneous songs (doha) of enlightenment. These "Hundred Thousand Songs" were collected many years after his death and are considered one of the pinnacles of Tibetan religious literature. As well as being astonishing works of poetry, they are also inspirational for practitioners of Buddhism. I feel they are also a wonderful gateway into the sometimes dizzying world of Vajrayana Buddhism. Having loved these Songs for many years, I thought it would be wonderful to spend six weeks exploring them. We'll start with an overview of Milarepa's life on the 2nd February and then take one song each week for the subsequent five sessions. We'll meet at 7.30pm UK time on Thursday evenings - for about an hour. A full, supporters fee which helps us cover our costs and a subsidised concessionary rate for any of you who are struggling financially. Paying the full fee allows us to invite more people on the lower rate. But if you would even struggle to pay that reduced ticket rate then please do drop us a line. We never want people to miss out on meditation because of poxy old money. We can sort something out for you. Book the two kinds of tickets here.
